Who we are

The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) is the Army’s national charity. Founded in 1944, our purpose is to provide a lifetime of support to serving soldiers, former soldiers, and their families when they are in need, ensuring they can avoid hardship and enjoy independence and dignity. The Charity operates a regional structure across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with its central office in London.

Over the past 4 years, the Charity has embarked on an ambitious plan to restructure and refocus the organisation to make it fit for the future. More recently, the Charity has reviewed its approach to fundraising; with the Fundraising Department now restructured, combined with a strategy to ensure sustainable growth, this is an exciting moment for a new Director of Fundraising to join the Army Benevolent Fund.

About the Role

Responsible for developing, updating, and implementing the Charity’s Fundraising strategy, the Director of Fundraising is responsible for the successful in-year delivery of the the Charity’s Fundraising Plan, whilst applying a creative and innovative fresh eye to determine where improvement can continue to be made across the fundraising function to ensure we achieve our required outcomes.

This role sits at Executive Board level. You will contribute collegiately and add significant value to broader operational issues; and equally assured and effective when engaging with the main Board of Trustees and the associated Fundraising & Marketing Committee.  On a more day-to-day basis, you will hold the ability to forge and sustain a collaborative approach with the Director of Communications & Marketing and her team.

The Director of Fundraising will provide strategic leadership to the Fundraising team, together with oversight of the work of volunteers, temporary staff, suppliers and external agencies as required, and will maintain & develop net income from all fundraising activities on a pan-charity basis.

 Who we are looking for

We are seeking a highly capable individual, with extensive experience in income generation, to achieve and exceed required financial targets and who brings focus, energy and accountability whilst inspiring high performance from their team. This role would particularly suit an individual who is a skilled and practiced leader motivated by achieving targets and growing income. The successful applicant will be an outstanding communicator, who can influence with credibility, and also has the people skills to work well with a wide range of stakeholders within and external to the Charity.

What We Offer

The starting salary is £94,500 per annum, with 30 days annual leave. After a probationary period of 6 months, the successful candidate will benefit from the Charity’s full range of employment benefits including an income protection scheme and an employer contribution pension. There will also be opportunities to participate in key Charity events and activities with a TOIL scheme in place. This is a full-time post for 35 hours per week, on a permanent contract based at the Charity’s Office in London Victoria (The Charity currently operates a minimum of 2 days in the office).
