Memories include first-hand accounts of seeing thousands of Germans surrender and an overriding sense of relief, alongside more light-hearted recollections of accidental crowd-surfing, contraband cake and fancy dress competition victories.

This compelling piece of original content distils over 1000 years’ experience into one fascinating podcast.

We shared all our VE Day plans with the charity’s long-time supporter Dame Vera Lynn who was already the Forces Sweetheart when were founded in 1944. She has a special message and special memories to share with you all ahead of tomorrow:

“Hello everyone, I would just like to wish you all well on this very special day. I was in the garden with my parents and grandparents when the news came through, and I think we celebrated with tea and cake! We might have had a glass of sherry after though.

I would also like to say to all those people who are self-isolating that my thoughts are with you, and we can all have a ‘cheers’ even if it’s only with a cup of tea or lemonade!”
