Daniel, the disabled son of an Army veteran, now enjoys more independent mobility after we contributed to building modifications to help him access his garden.

Daniel has cerebral palsy and lives with his mum, Samantha. As a full-time wheelchair-user, he was unable to access his garden and patio from the family’s kitchen without Samantha’s help.

Samantha says: “Being disabled can rob you of independence and freedom. For Daniel to get to the garden, I had to push him in his wheelchair out of the side door and over a slight step, which was not safe for him or me.”

Samantha approached our partner charity SSAFA after her local council was unable to fund improvements to the access point from the kitchen to the garden, although she was able to pay some costs. In summer 2022, our charity contributed £2,500 towards the costs of improved access to the garden area, in collaboration with the Royal Artillery and the Royal British Legion.

Samantha says: “Daniel can now access the garden on his own and we can have meals together outside.”

Daniel says: “It is amazing and lovely to be outside on the patio with family and friends. I can now play outside with our dog Lenny. Thank you.”
