David Harris with his award
David with his award at the 2016 Charity Staff & Volunteers Awards

David Harris, Deputy Chief Security Officer at our Corporate Partner, Barclays has won in the Charity Staff & Volunteers Awards 2016, winning in the Corporate Sector Charity Champion category.

David has for the last 14 years been Deputy Chief Security Officer at Barclays, based in Canary Wharf. Prior to this, he was a Senior Inspector in the Royal Hong Kong Police before moving back to the UK.

As a senior Director at Barclays, David’s key motivations are identifying opportunities for change and driving strategic improvements that add value to the organisation; but David shows equal drive and determination in his support of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and is one of our most valued corporate ambassadors and friend of the Charity. He is also excellent at persuading both colleagues and clients to support our work.

In 2013, David was key in organising and participated in the epic Cycle 2000 challenge, a 2000km cycle ride between the Barclays Premiership stadia. David flew the flag for The Soldiers’ Charity with gusto, despite the grueling two weeks in the saddle. With a number of related fundraising events including a black tie dinner at the Emirates Stadium the challenge raised a staggering £260k overall, with funds supporting educational and vocational training courses for wounded, injured and long-term sick soldiers transitioning out of the Army into civilian careers.

David pushed himself to the physical limit in his fundraising, successfully completing the epic Marathon des Sables in April 2015, raising £20.2k with his team mate.

Not satisfied with these sterling efforts he plans to undertake another challenge later this year in support of the Charity which will involve a large number of Barclays’ employees.

Major General Martin Rutledge, Chief Executive at The Soldiers’ Charity says:

“David’s dedication and enthusiasm is an example to us all. What he has achieved in support of the charity is to be applauded and on behalf of the Charity and those we help, I thank him most sincerely.”
