Bob “Foss” Wells, a veteran of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, has completed an extraordinary fundraising challenge for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF), travelling 216 miles along the UK’s canal network in a traditional wooden punt and raising more than £5,000 for the Army family.
Foss arrived at Tewitfield Marina on Saturday 18 July, finishing the challenge ahead of schedule after navigating 179 locks and spending several weeks living aboard his 25-foot Oxford punt, Mayfly.
He set off from Stratford-upon-Avon on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 27 June, with the ambitious goal of raising £5,000 for the ABF, and thanks to generous online donations and bucket collections from people he met along the way, Foss not only achieved his target but exceeded it.
The journey took him through some of the country’s most historic canals, travelling single-handedly for much of the route and meeting supporters, fellow boaters and veterans along the way.
Foss said:
“The military need to know they are valued by the society whose values they protect. With that in the back of my mind, I was able to keep going when it got a bit tough.
“A real thank you to everybody who supported me.”
In recognition of his outstanding achievement, Foss was presented with a special commemorative plaque by the ABF, engraved with his name to mark his remarkable fundraising effort.
