We are delighted to award a £100,000 grant to The Poppy Factory, to fund the charity’s employment services for Army veterans.
The Army Benevolent Fund has a long-standing funding relationship with The Poppy Factory, which has been helping veterans back into work for over a hundred years. The charity’s specialist Employment Service helps those most vulnerable to mental and physical health conditions; 80 per cent of its beneficiaries are former soldiers.
One beneficiary supported through the programme is Simon, a former Reservist with the Royal Logistic Corps. He served with 29 Regiment and completed two operational tours in Afghanistan. Like a number of veterans, Simon faced significant challenges after leaving the Army. He struggled with his mental health and was eventually diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which led to long-term unemployment, isolation, and mounting debt.
With support from his GP, Simon began counselling and gradually started to rebuild his life. He was later referred to The Poppy Factory, where he received tailored employment support from his Forces Employment Consultant, Andrew. Thanks to Andrew’s guidance, Simon secured a role at Merseyrail, marking a positive new chapter in his recovery and return to civilian life.
Simon says: “It’s an understatement to say that Andrew literally changed my life. He isn’t just about employment but everything to do with your life to put you in a better position for employment.
“I struggle to put into words what the support from The Poppy Factory and the ABF has achieved for me. Thank you.”
Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer, Army Benevolent Fund, added:
“The Poppy Factory delivers outstanding employment support for Army veterans who face complex and deeply personal challenges as they transition to civilian life. Simon’s journey is just one example of the life-changing impact this support can have.”
