We are proud to award a grant to the Army Widows Association (AWA), a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved spouses, partners, and their children through peer-to-peer connection, practical advice, and access to specialist support.

The AWA exists to ensure no bereaved Army family member feels alone. Through a combination of respite events, private online networks, professional counselling, and personalised outreach, the charity provides its members with comfort and understanding from a community of peers who have experienced similar loss.

This year, our grant of £39,115 will support the AWA’s core programme of care, including timely access to professional counselling to help bereaved partners receive appropriate mental health support; a series of respite opportunities and remembrance events; as well as practical communications and outreach. It will also provide operational support so the charity can continue to deliver its vital services effectively and remain a strong voice for Army families.

Members frequently describe AWA as a lifeline, offering both understanding and solidarity. As one member shared:

“I always look forward to respite with the group of ladies from the AWA. I can be myself and feel comfortable with others who ‘understand’. I came away with a new interest as well as spending an enjoyable weekend with friends.”

Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer of the Army Benevolent Fund, said:

“We are proud to support the Army Widows Association in its vital work providing care and community to bereaved families. Through this grant, we help ensure that bereaved Army families are never left without support, connection, and understanding.”
