Team members from ESS Defence have raised an incredible £24,000 in support of the Army Benevolent Fund and the RAF Benevolent Fund, thanks to an ambitious 80-day fundraising challenge inspired by the distance around the globe.

Staff from the company’s Wales & West Midlands region took on the challenge of collectively covering 40,075 km – the circumference of the Earth – in just 80 days. Through a remarkable display of energy and commitment, colleagues walked, ran, cycled, and rowed their way beyond the target, ultimately reaching a total of 46,212 km logged across 2,432 activities.

The challenge was more than just a physical feat. Sites across the region hosted a variety of themed events to support the campaign, including bake sales, global cuisine days, afternoon teas, raffles, and even a sponsored football match. The fundraising drive concluded with a charity dinner night, where ESS chefs prepared a three-course meal and guests took part in a silent auction and prize raffle.

In addition to raising vital funds, the initiative also boosted team spirit and wellbeing, with staff taking part in group hikes, walks, and fitness activities, including a memorable climb up Pen y Fan. The campaign also fostered closer collaboration with clients and customers, uniting communities around a shared goal.

Graham Whitehouse, Regional Director West Midlands, Army Benevolent Fund, said:

“We are incredibly grateful to the entire ESS Wales & West Midlands team for their outstanding effort and commitment in supporting the Army Benevolent Fund and the RAF Benevolent Fund through their “Around the World in 80 Days” challenge. Raising over £24,000 is a truly remarkable achievement and a testament to their creativity, teamwork, and generosity.

“Not only have they made a significant financial contribution, they’ve also brought people together across sites and communities to support the wider military family. These funds will make a real and lasting difference to the lives of soldiers, veterans, and their families, who rely on our help. On behalf of everyone at the Army Benevolent Fund, thank you for going the extra mile, literally and figuratively, to stand with those who serve.”
