Army veterans and their families will benefit from improved, healthier, living spaces through our £150,000 grant to Haig Housing.

Serviceable, safe homes play a crucial role in the wellbeing of many veterans after their service career comes to an end. Yet many long‑standing veteran properties require essential upgrades to stay secure and fit for purpose. Rising maintenance costs and new government standards have created a funding gap that threatens this important work.

Haig Housing is the UK’s largest charitable housing provider for the veteran community, offering around 1,500 affordable homes across 50 locations. The charity ensures veterans and their families have access to safe, decent, and stable accommodation.

Our £150,000 grant will help support Haig Housing’s programme to replace ageing kitchens and bathrooms in properties occupied by Army families. Each refurbishment includes modern fittings, improved ventilation, and long‑lasting, hygienic materials designed to create healthier environments, reduce condensation and mould risks, and restore comfort and dignity at home.

For veteran families, these improvements can be transformative. Former soldier William, a beneficiary of the programme, said:

“The kitchen refurbishment has made such a difference to our lives. Thanks to the Army Benevolent Fund’s generous grant to Haig Housing, we now have a beautiful new kitchen where my family can cook, eat, and spend time together.”

Haig Housing’s work supports long‑term wellbeing by reducing intrusive maintenance, improving air quality, and giving households the confidence and stability needed to focus on recovery, family life, and transitions into civilian employment. This year, a significant number of Army families are expected to benefit directly from these improvements.

Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer at the Army Benevolent Fund, said:

“Safe and secure housing is fundamental to the welfare of veterans and their families. Haig Housing provides this stability, often at critical moments, and these refurbishments make a tangible difference to daily life. Our funding will help ensure Army families can continue to live in homes that support their health, dignity, and long‑term independence.”

Tim Stockings, Chief Executive at Haig Housing Trust said:

“We are extremely grateful to the Army Benevolent Fund for their support in helping Haig Housing improve homes for veterans and their families. We are committed to making homes more comfortable, energy efficient, and safer and grants like these mean that we can do more, faster.”
