Army veterans, reservists, and their families will receive improved access to face-to-face support in Cornwall, following our £16,407 grant to Smart Savings CIC towards expanding its network of Armed Forces hubs.

Cornwall is home to around 39,000 military veterans, some of whom face complex challenges including isolation, debt, housing insecurity and struggles with mental health. Smart Savings CIC provides trusted community spaces where veterans can access help with these challenges without barriers or delay.

Our funding will support the expansion of Smart Savings’ hubs from six to eight locations, enabling wider reach across the county. Each hub offers a safe, welcoming environment where veterans can receive practical financial guidance, including help with budgeting, benefits, debt management, and navigating the rising cost of living. This is offered alongside tailored advice on housing, employment, education, and health and wellbeing.

By bringing multiple services together in one place, the hubs make it easier for veterans to address financial pressures early – often a key factor in preventing issues from escalating into crisis. Veterans can also connect with others over a brew and a chat, helping reduce isolation and rebuild confidence.

The hubs operate through a strong partnership model, with more than 30 military charities, public services and local organisations attending regularly. This coordinated approach enables early intervention, holistic support and better outcomes for those facing multiple and complex needs.

Over the past year, Smart Savings CIC has successfully led hubs in Redruth, Bodmin and Newquay, supporting veterans and families experiencing challenges such as serious debt, homelessness, mental ill‑health and the impact of the rising cost of living. The project has also introduced wellbeing sessions led by trained veteran support workers; and expanded volunteering opportunities, helping veterans develop new skills while supporting their peers.

Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer of the Army Benevolent Fund, said:

“Smart Savings’ Armed Forces hubs offer more than advice – they provide early, practical intervention at a time when financial pressures can quickly become overwhelming. By combining financial guidance with wider wellbeing support, the hubs play a vital role in helping veterans regain stability and move forward with confidence.”
