Talk and Lunch on the War of 1812 with Matthew Taylor

Join us on Sunday, 25th January for an exciting lunchtime talk with Matthew Taylor as he explores the events and impact of the War of 1812. It’s a chance to enjoy a good meal, hear an engaging look at an important period in history, and spend time with others in support of the ABF. We hope you’ll join us for an enjoyable and informative afternoon.

Matthew will tell the story of the War of 1812 from the perspective of a British force few have heard of – the enslaved African Americans who escaped slavery during the war and took up arms on behalf of Great Britain and fought against their former masters. These ‘Colonial Marines’, all volunteers integrated into the Royal Marines, fought under the Union Jack for freedom in the rawest and truest sense; for only death, lifelong degradation, or victory could result.

Matthew Taylor

Matthew Taylor is a career Civil Servant who has worked for the House of Lords for over a decade. A history enthusiast with a particular focus on little known stories that confound common historical narratives: his time at the heart of British politics has taught him the value of history in allowing us to better know ourselves today, and work towards a greater future. He is from Middlesborough and this is the topic of his first book.
