Richard Price’s interest in the Army was shaped by his father’s experiences as a soldier in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War.
Growing up in Mottingham, SW London, Richard was aware of his father’s respect for the armed forces, which fostered a similar admiration in him from an early age. “My father’s life and character were pivotal in shaping my respect for the Army,” he recalls. Despite initially aspiring to join the military, Richard’s journey took him in a different direction towards a career in law. However, the Army has always remained in his mind as a “What if…” scenario, keeping his passion for military history and values alive.
Richard says his parents shaped his ethical and moral values. They taught him the importance of duty, patience, and wisdom, — qualities that he has tried to follow throughout his life. In addition to his family, Richard acknowledges the influence of his teachers, who nurtured his love for learning and contributed to his personal growth.
After building a successful career in the City of London and managing offices in the Middle East, Richard now lives in Tarrington, Herefordshire, a place he fell in love with during holiday visits. “I was drawn to the musical life here,” he shares. An active member of his local community, Richard served as a former Lay Canon of Hereford Cathedral and as Chairman of the Malvern Concert Club. His passion for the arts, literature, and music is matched only by his commitment to supporting various charitable causes.
Richard deeply appreciates the ABF’s mission, particularly its focus on providing support for veterans in need. “The most important aspect of the Army Benevolent Fund’s work is raising awareness of the sacrifices veterans have made and addressing their needs,” he states.
His belief in the power of individual contributions is strong. “Every great enterprise starts with one person,” Richard asserts, emphasising that even a single act of kindness can ripple out to create significant change. “I hope my support can help alleviate some of the hardships faced by ex-servicemen and women,” he adds. He himself feels honoured to support the Army family and witness the tangible relief brought to ex-servicemen and women through contributions like his.
As a supporter who has pledged a gift in his will, Richard understands that this form of giving is not only a way to leave a lasting legacy but also a means to ensure that those who have served our country receive the help they deserve. “It’s the easiest way for them not to miss the money,” he quips when encouraging friends to consider a similar pledge.
“I want to inspire others to think about how their legacy can benefit those in need,” he adds.
The ABF’s reliance on gifts in Wills highlights the vital role of supporters like Richard in sustaining the organisation’s efforts. These contributions are instrumental in funding various programmes that assist veterans, providing them with the necessary resources to navigate the challenges they face after service. “From providing financial assistance to funding mental health support, the ABF works tirelessly to ensure that veterans do not struggle alone,” he emphasises.
By sharing his experiences and encouraging others to consider gifts in wills, Richard is helping to create a community that honours and supports the sacrifices made by the Army family.
As the Army Benevolent Fund continues its mission to support the Army family, the contributions of individuals like Richard Price are invaluable. Gifts in Wills are not just financial donations; they are heartfelt commitments to ensuring that the legacy of those who served is honoured and that their needs are met. With each pledge, supporters are helping to secure a brighter future for the soldiers, veterans and their families who have given so much for their country, ensuring they receive the care and support they rightfully deserve.
Richard Price’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of legacy giving. As gifts in Wills account for nearly a third of the ABF’s overall fundraising efforts, it is essential to recognise that every gift, no matter the size, contributes to a larger mission of compassion and support for those who have served. By considering a gift in your Will, you, too, can make a difference in the lives of soldiers, veterans and their families.
