The Battle of the Somme Dinner

Join the Army Benevolent Fund for a truly memorable evening as we commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the most defining and poignant moments of the First World War. On Friday, 3rd July 2026, guests are invited to gather in the magnificent Indian Army Memorial Room at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for an evening of remembrance, history, and fellowship.
The Battle of the Somme stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice, courage, and endurance. Beginning in July 1916, it became one of the largest battles in human history, involving more than three million men and leaving an indelible mark on nations across the world. Soldiers from across the British Empire—including Indian troops and, in later conflicts, the Gurkhas—answered the call of duty, making the Indian Army Memorial Room a fitting and deeply meaningful setting for this anniversary.
Following dinner, the evening will include a talk from our guest speaker, Terry Whenham. He is a renowned First World War historian and acclaimed podcaster—who will bring the story of the Battle of the Somme to life through expert insight, vivid storytelling, and a human perspective on the battle that reshaped a generation.
