The Forgotten Hero of Bletchley Park – John Tiltman

A Talk by Harold Liberty

Followed by lunch on Sunday 2nd March 2025

The Forgotten Hero of Bletchley Park – Brigadier John Tiltman

After First World War service and winning the Military Cross, Tiltman worked as soldier, civilian and soldier again. But Tiltman was much more. He was the one everyone came to for help with their codes and he was the trusted post-war liaison between the UK and the USA through rocky times when post-war communism undermined the mutual trust.
The talk will not be all ‘passive’ – there are codes for you to solve as well!

Harold Liberty

Harold taught for 40 years after getting a ‘first’ at Cambridge. On retirement he became involved with Bletchley Park and is now a steward, guide and authority on the history of the codebreakers who worked there. In 2022 he published the first full biography about John Tiltman, and is currently working on two further books about BP.
