Today, on Remembrance Sunday, the nation will fall silent to remember the fallen.
Our President, General Sir James Everard KCB CBE, will lay a wreath during the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund and all the regimental and corps charities and associations. This is one of many events and ceremonies around the UK held to honour all those who died to defend our freedoms and our way of life.
General Sir James Everard says: “On Remembrance Sunday we come together as a nation to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of all the men and women of the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who died in the service of our country. In this, our 80th anniversary year, I am honoured to lay a wreath on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund and all the regimental and corps charities and associations.”
Members of the Royal Family, politicians and representatives of the Armed Forces paying tribute at the Cenotaph will be joined by veterans taking part in a March Past. Many of the charities we proudly fund will be represented in this parade – including beneficiaries from Care for Veterans, Royal Star and Garter, The Not Forgotten, and many others.
The Army Benevolent Fund was set up in 1944 during World War Two to ensure that our brave servicemen and women would not face the post-war hardships endured by those who fought in World War One.
80 years later, we remain true to our founding purpose – to ensure soldiers, veterans and their immediate families can avoid hardship and live with independence and dignity.
